Internship/Externship (Unpaid) or Volunteering Opportunity for Nursing Students

Dear Nursing Colleague: 

The Hudson Valley New York Black Nurses Association (HVNYBNA) is seeking a motivated nursing student to support the redesign of our organization’s website, making it more educational, informative, and interactive.  We are also excited to promote and create the next generation of leaders and community-minded nurses.

HVNYBNA, through collegial relationships, empowers nurses, provides leadership to advance nursing practice, and improves healthcare for all Americans, particularly underserved communities.  We are actively engaged in the many issues currently challenging the nursing profession.


Project Title/Role

Nursing Student Project Lead: Website Redesign and Member Engagement 

Key Responsibilities

  • Website Assessment: Review the current website and identify areas for improvement in content, design, interactivity, and user experience.
  • Project Management: develop and follow a simple project plan/timeline with milestones and deliverables.
  • Feedback Gathering: meet with HVNYBNA’s President to discuss strengths and vulnerabilities of the current website. Review other nursing organizations’ websites to gather input on best practice ideas. 
  • Presentation: share final recommendations and/or design prototypes with the HVNYBNA Executive Board. 

Expected Outcomes

  • A practical plan or prototype for a redesigned website with clear educational and interactive features.

Learning & Professional Development Opportunities

  • Gain leadership and project management experience in a real-world setting.
  • Develop communication and collaboration skills working with nursing leaders and community stakeholders.
  • Enhance understanding of community health promotion within a professional nursing organization.
  • One year paid membership to the National Black Nurses Association (NBNA) with local membership fees waived if currently a nurse. 
  • Interface with various committees for a professional nursing organization, including but not limited to:
    • Bylaws and Nominating Committee
    • Education, Mentoring, and Community Service Committee
    • Scholarship, Awards Planning, Communication/Social Media, PR & Planning Committee  
    • Local chapter meetings

Qualifications

  • Current nursing student (undergraduate or graduate).
  • Interest in community health, nursing leadership, and health equity.
  • Basic familiarity with websites, digital content, or a willingness to learn.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively. 

Time Commitment

  • Flexible: can be customized based on the course/project deadline. 
  • Duration: To be completed by the end of the semester, the student must choose to accept the semester. 

Supervision & Support

  • Opportunity to receive mentorship from HVNYBNA President, Committee Chairs, experienced nurses, and community leaders.
